"Musing upon what happens when someone looks too closely at a painting and sees only dabs of paint, this piece came into existence. Get too close to the canvas and you see only the building blocks of the work but not the work itself. Pull back the right amount and you see its full splendor. But what happens if you hover between those two points where the image is not fully discernible? You see it there vaguely, you discover what it is, but your mind must fill in the details. In a sense, you are painting the piece with me and interacting with it. To me, that is what impressionism is all about. I find that really satisfying." -artist's personal notes.
At the center of the composition lies a large, impressionistic image of a rose, subtly rendered in dense clusters of pink and red hues. This central element is ensnared in a web of intersecting lines and splashes of color, adding layers of depth and complexity to the piece. The chaotic yet harmonious interplay of shapes and colors invites viewers to engage deeply and explore the abstract forms presented.
Contemplating the correlation between improper focal length and impressionist works, this concept manifests itself as the central rose becomes discernible only after prolonged viewing. Through this interaction, viewers are challenged to mentally reconstruct the image, thus becoming co-creators in the experience. This process of discovery not only heightens engagement but also underscores the intricate relationship between perspective and understanding in the realm of abstract art.
