You go on vacation and look what happens!

Well, my wife and I spent a couple weeks in Hawaii soaking up the sun and enjoying the works of the grandest artist of all, our Creator. The natural beauty of the island can only be described as spectacular. The sunsets of Maui are a marvel of color blending into color thanks to the volcanic ash in the air from a neighboring island. My iPhone camera couldn't even pick up all the tones. Even so, I think I'll have to do a painting or two and try to capture those gorgeous, vibrant colors.

Now that I'm back home I'm getting into a routine again. Continuing with my foray into creating more depth, I seem to have hit a snag! You see, in my artist's statement for one of my earlier paintings, I mentioned I am not always in control of my work. Rarely, I will be working toward a goal but the painting just hits my eye and tells me it is complete. No matter how much I want to push on, I can't. I have to trust my eye and say "it is finished!". Yes, you guessed it, it happened with this piece. I only just started dripping the intermediate shades of color when my eye told me the work was complete. I was as surprised as you may be. Sigh. I will have to sign this one and start over again, hopefully being able to add all the lighter shades I purposed from the beginning. The picture above doesn't capture the fullness and the darkness of the real thing and I'll have to blame my quick snapshot on that. I'll get set up properly for the quality photo and let you know when it's up in the gallery.

In the mean time, while I'm getting the photograph just right, I have a series to complete and this "depth" journey to start over. More to come soon!

A bit about technique

It's interesting what happens while someone paints the type of paintings I do. Well, I guess I should say "what happens to ME" because I'm not sure what goes on in the minds of other artists. As you
